Keeping a prayer journal

I have kept a prayer journal for many years. Some years I am more diligent with documenting my prayer life. When I write about my journey with God, keep track of Bible verses which speak to me, write some of my prayers out and try and keep in tune with what God might be saying to me, I think my prayer life and faith life are far richer.

My prayer journals have got me through some very difficult times in my life and I am sure they can do the same for you. Tracking notebook prayer journal ideas and events is a great way to monitor how your prayer life with God affects your daily life.

There are many different ways in which you can journal and we have various blog posts which you might like to look at to gain inspiration for yourself. Deepen your spiritual life with these faith journal ideas

I generally pick out a new prayer journal at the beginning of each year. I write better when the lines on the page have a greater gap between them. I like notebooks/journals that open easily. I choose a front cover that speaks to me.

I did once have a prayer journal that was an all-black cover, like a diary, but I didn’t really enjoy using it. I think that prayer journals need to be attractive to the user, a beautiful journal is one that you will want to write in.

One thing I do know is that I like to write things down. I like a proper notebook and I like to write in it in blue pen. You may love a digital prayer journal but it is not for me. I also like a proper Bible, not an app. I like to turn pages and feel the Bible in my hands.

I do know that some people find it difficult to keep a prayer journal. They find it hard to pray and journal. Or they find it hard enough to pray without journaling on top of that. Some people don’t hear from God as well as others, or at least they think that they might not hear from God as well as others.

Most of us enjoy quiet time away from the busyness and stress of the world. And creating a simple prayer journal for yourself could be the perfect way to start or finish your day. A quiet prayer routine can become a source of strength in your life, so don’t underestimate the potential of this daily time.

So, for all those people who would love to keep a prayer journal here is a selection of notebook prayer journal ideas to help you get started, and maintain the practice of prayer journaling.

As a final comment remember that the purpose of a prayer journal is not to treat God like a slot machine: Requests in equals prayers answered out. Rather, your daily prayer journal is a record of your relationship with God.

Let’s look at different ways you can use your prayer journal. Ideally you will eventually create your own diy prayer journal which suits you and your prayer life perfectly. So use the suggestions below to start to formulate a plan for how you want to create your own journal.

Use your notebook prayer journal to document your Bible study

Documenting your Bible study is a powerful way to get used to writing in your prayer journal. Here are some prayer ideas to help you document your quiet time.

  1. Choose a passage: Select a passage of scripture or a Bible verse that you want to study. It could be a verse, a chapter, or an entire book of the Bible. You may already be working your way through a book or theme in the Bible in which case use that.
  2. Read and reflect: Read the passage slowly and thoughtfully. As you read, reflect on what it means and how it applies to your life.
  3. Write down observations: Write down any observations or insights that come to mind as you read God’s word. Consider the context, the author’s intent, and any historical or cultural factors that may be relevant. This simple form of Bible journaling will also help you to understand that Bible much better for yourself so be open to those observations.
  4. Identify key themes: Look for key themes or ideas that emerge from the passage. Consider how they relate to other passages in the Bible, and how they apply to your life.
  5. Write down questions: Write down any questions that come to mind as you study. Consider what you don’t understand, what you want to learn more about, and what you want to apply to your life.
  6. Pray: Take some time to pray about what you’ve learned. You can use repeated prayer journal prompts such as:
  7. Thank God for His word, and ask Him to help you apply it to your life.
  8. Pray for wisdom and understanding.
  9. Ask Him to reveal any areas of your life where you need to grow or change.
  10. Reflect on your journal: As you continue to pray and study, reflect on your prayer journal entries. Look for patterns or themes that emerge, and see how God has been at work in your life. Use your prayer journal to track your progress and to remind yourself of the insights you’ve gained.

Remember, the goal of Bible study is not simply to gain knowledge, but to deepen your relationship with God and to apply His word to your life. By incorporating Bible study into your prayer journaling, you can create a powerful tool for spiritual growth and transformation.

Prayer journal sections

Having dedicated prayer journal sections in your journal can help you stay organized and focused as you pray. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using prayer journal sections:

  1. Organization: By having a dedicated section for prayer requests, answered prayers, and gratitude, you can keep all of your prayer-related entries in one place. This can make it easier to review your entries and see how God has been at work in your life over time.
  2. Focus: Separating your prayer entries into sections can help you stay focused on specific aspects of prayer. For example, you might have a section for prayers related to your family, another section for prayers related to your job, and another section for prayers related to your spiritual growth. This can help you stay focused on the areas of your life that you want to pray about, and prevent your prayers from becoming too general or scattered.
  3. Accountability: By having a dedicated section for gratitude, you can create a habit of reflecting on the blessings in your life and expressing thanks to God. This can help you cultivate a heart of gratitude and keep your focus on the positive aspects of your life.
  4. Tracking progress: By keeping a prayer list with a record of your prayer requests and answered prayers, you can track your progress over time and see how God has been working in your life. This can be a powerful tool for spiritual growth and transformation, as you see how God has been faithful to answer your prayers and meet your needs.

Ultimately, whether or not you choose to have dedicated prayer journal sections is up to you. The most important thing is to create a space for you to connect with God, pour out your heart to Him, and listen for His voice.

Prayer Journal template

There are many different types of prayer journals, no one size fits all. However, here is a template that you can use to get started with your own prayer journal. Use the prayer prompts below and then adapt them or create your own prompts that best fit your needs. Finding a regular slot for your daily prayer time will help you keep your practice regular. You may like to play some worship music as you pray and journal.

  1. Date: Start by writing the date and day of the week of your entry at the top of the page in your prayer notebook.
  2. Gratitude: Begin by writing down three things that you’re grateful for. This could be anything from the people in your life, to the opportunities you have, to the simple pleasures of life.
  3. Prayer requests: Write down and keep track of prayer requests that you have. This could be for yourself, for your loved ones, for your community, or for the world at large. Be specific and include any details that will help you remember what you’re praying for.
  4. Answered prayers: If you have any answered prayers to share, write them down in this section. Include the date the prayer was answered and any details about how our Heavenly Father has worked in your life to answer the prayer.
  5. Reflections: Use this section to reflect on your prayer requests and answered prayers. Write down any insights or impressions that come to mind, and consider how God is at work in your life and the good things he sends your way. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you in the quiet of your reflections.
  6. Scripture: Choose a passage of scripture or a scripture verse that speaks to you and write it down. Reflect on the passage and consider how it applies to your life.
  7. Prayers of confession: Use this section to confess any sins or shortcomings that you need to bring before God. Ask for His forgiveness and guidance in overcoming these areas of weakness.
  8. Intercessory prayer: Use this section to pray for others. Write down the names of people or groups that you want to lift up in prayer, and include any details about their needs or situations.

Remember, this is just one example of a prayer journal template, and you can adapt it to fit your own preferences and needs. The most important thing is to create a structure that works for you and helps you stay focused on your prayer life.

Lectio Divina

You may find it useful to develop the practice of Lectio Divina as you develop your prayer life through your prayer journal.

Lectio Divina is a form of prayerful reading of the Bible that has been practiced by Christians for centuries. It involves reading a short passage of scripture several times, with the goal of listening to God’s voice and allowing the words of the Bible to speak to your heart. The outline below is very similar to the outline above in the section entitled: Use your notebook prayer journal to document your Bible study with a few variations. Use whichever appeals to you.

Here’s how you can incorporate Lectio Divina into your prayer journal:

  1. Choose a passage of scripture: Begin by choosing a short passage of scripture that you want to meditate on. This could be a verse, a few sentences, or a longer section, depending on your preference.
  2. Read the passage: Start by reading the passage slowly and attentively. Pay attention to any words or phrases that stand out to you.
  3. Reflect: After reading the passage, take a few moments to reflect on what you’ve read. Ask yourself what the passage means, and how it applies to your life.
  4. Meditate: Read the passage again, slowly and thoughtfully. As you read, try to imagine yourself in the scene, and consider what God might be saying to you through the words.
  5. Pray: Respond to God’s voice by praying about what you’ve read with your own prayers. Thank Him for the insights He’s given you, ask for guidance, and express any needs or concerns you have.
  6. Contemplate: Take a few moments to simply be still and listen for God’s voice. Let the words of the passage sink into your heart, and allow God to speak to you through them. Reflect on God’s love and what that means to you.
  7. Journal: Write down any insights, impressions, or prayers that came to mind during your time of lectio divina. You can also use this time to reflect on how you can apply the passage to your life.

By incorporating lectio divina into your prayer journal, you can deepen your relationship with God and gain new insights into His Word. Over time, you may find that this practice becomes an important part of your daily prayer life.
